Senior horticulture students spent a day at Leafy Hollow Lavender Farm learning how to distill oils from plants. As well as learning all about the different types of lavenders and their uses, students harvested and prepared botanical materials for distillation.
Pauline Livesey, our host for the day demonstrated some of the extraction processes and showed how oils could be used in formulating products such as soaps, creams, sprays and, of course, oils. Pauline is an award-winning producer and member of the New Zealand lavender growers association.
After distilling the botanicals, students produced their own refreshing lemon myrtle and bay spray to take home.
Thank you to Pauline Livesey from Leafy Hollow for sharing her knowledge and expertise with us all. We learned heaps!

Students had the opportunity to investigate and make observation drawings and notes of everything they have experienced. A big thank you to Whaea Moana for welcoming us and to Whaea Lisa who helped with transport.
