Cultural Opportunities

Many of our students have talents and interests which extend to the cultural and performing arts. Students have access to free vocal and instrumental tuition through the Itinerant Music Service programme. In addition to Music, Drama and Visual Art programmes of learning, a full calendar of cultural events happen throughout the year.

Art Champs

An opportunity for enthusiastic artists to engage in community arts project.

Chess

Chess is a common activity in the Hub where students play daily to improve their skills. An active chess team participates in several local tournaments including an annual event run by the college. Thanks to Chess Power for their support.

Choir

HPC has a large choir who participate and compete in The Big Sing, a Waikato / Bay of Plenty choral competition.

Every second year, the HPC Choir with the Jazz band go on a ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ performing for several schools in the North Island.

Concerts which take place throughout the year:

One Autumn Night – an outdoor concert featuring young performers in both solos and bands

Unplugged - featuring more classical and quieter pieces

DVD Release – students write and record their own music which is release on an album.

Christian Group

Sharing one’s faith and putting it into action.

Creative Writing Club

Meets regularly to encourage budding writers to understand the creative process.

Debating

Interested in proving a point? Debating teams compete against other schools in the Waikato Drama productions.

Drama Productions

Drama productions are linked to the NCEA assessments at senior level.

E-sports

A new addition to the co-curricular programme. Heaps of fun.

Jazz band

Kapa Haka

The Kapa Haka group practise weekly and support important public occasions such as prize givings and special assemblies.

Photography Club

For budding photographers wanting to learn the finer points of taking action and still photos.

Rockquest

Every year HPC enters several bands in the Smokefree Rockquest competition. Smokefree Rockquest is NZ’s only nationwide, live, original music youth event. Rockquest aims to motivate young musicians to prove their ability in solo / duo and group performances.

School Magazine

Both writers and photographers come together to produce the annual school magazine which becomes an invaluable record of college life year by year.

Showquest

Showquest is a dance, drama and design performing arts global event which reflects the personalities, concerns, hopes, dreams and interests of students. Each year up to 50 HPC students work as a team, together with teachers, parents and the wider community to create their performance in front of many other schools in our region.
